How it's calculated

  1. Notice period in days: last working day = resignation date + number of days − 1, if the resignation date is day 1. Otherwise, it’s the resignation date + number of days. A week is 7 days.
  2. Notice period in months: add months to the resignation date (1 October + 1 month = 1 November), subtract one day if the resignation date is day 1 (31 October). If the date doesn’t exist in the month later, use the month's last day first: 31 January + 1 month = 28 February (or 29 in a leap year), making the last day 27 February.
  3. Calendar days count every day, including weekends and holidays.
  4. Buyout ≈ monthly pay ÷ 30 × days you leave early, minus any leave days your employer agrees to use up.

In India, your notice period is in your offer or appointment letter and your employer's HR policy. Indian offer letters often show notice periods of 30 to 90 days. Though an employer might accept a buyout or agree to an early release, it's not required; make sure you get any agreement in writing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I calculate my last day at work?
Start counting your notice from your resignation date. If you give 30 days' notice and count the resignation day as day 1, resigning on 1 October 2026 means your last day is Friday, 30 October 2026. If notice starts the day after, then it would be Saturday, 31 October 2026.
Does one month's notice equal 30 days?
Not necessarily. A month's notice ends the day before that same date in the following month. If you resign on 15 January 2027 with a two-month notice, your last working day is 14 March 2027 (59 days). But with a 60-day notice, it ends on 15 March 2027. If the next month is shorter, use the last day of that month: a month from 31 January 2027 ends on 27 February 2027.
Are weekends and holidays included in the notice period?
This calculator includes calendar days, so weekends and public holidays are counted. If your contract counts only working days, your last day will be different. Check your contract or appointment letter for details.
What does notice period buyout mean?
It means you pay your employer for the notice days you skip, allowing early leaving; sometimes a new employer pays for you. This calculator uses monthly pay ÷ 30 for daily pay. For ₹30,000 monthly pay, leaving 20 days early costs about ₹20,000; with 5 days of leave applied, it's ₹15,000. Check your contract to see if basic or gross pay applies.
Is it possible to use leave to reduce my notice period?
Some employers allow using earned leave to reduce the notice period, while others don't. It depends on your contract and the company's leave policy. Write to HR before making plans.
What is the usual notice period in India?
Your offer letter or appointment letter will show your notice period. Indian offer letters commonly state notice periods of 30 to 90 days, and some have a shorter period during probation. To leave earlier, you can ask for an early release in writing or offer to buy out the remaining notice days.
