Tips for writing a resume that stands out
Recruiters often glance over a resume before diving in. Make it easy for them to find key details, and support your claims with evidence.
1. Contact details
Start with your full name at the top, followed by a line with your city, phone number, and a frequently checked email. Use a straightforward email with your name, not a nickname. Add a LinkedIn or portfolio link only if updated. You don't need your full address, birth date, father's name, or marital status.
2. Summary
In two or three lines, describe who you are, your strengths, and the job you want. Include the role and one or two skills from the job ad. Freshers can list their degree along with a project or internship; experienced individuals should start with their years of experience and a notable result. Avoid using common phrases like “hard-working team player” that appear in every resume.
3. Work experience with numbers
List your jobs and internships from most recent: job title, company, city, and dates. Under each, include two to five bullet points starting with a verb showing a result, like “Handled 60 customer calls daily”, “Reduced stock errors by 15%”, or “Trained 4 new team members”. Numbers make claims credible and are easy to spot when skimming.
4. Education
Begin with your highest qualification: degree, college, years, and your score (CGPA or percentage). Freshers can include Class XII and Class X; after some work experience, listing the degree is sufficient. Still studying? Include the expected completion year, like “2026 (expected)”.
5. Skills
List the tools and skills requested in the job ad that you can use proficiently, such as Tally, Excel, SQL, or spoken English. Use exact terms from the job ad when they apply to you, as recruiters and ATS tools look for them. Exclude anything you're not prepared to discuss in an interview.
6. Projects for freshers
If you have little to no work experience, projects show what you can do. List projects from college, your final year, or any freelance or volunteer work. Share what you created, the tools you used, and what it achieved. If you can, include a link to your work, like GitHub, a portfolio, or a live site.
Fresher resume format
Keep a fresher's resume to a single page, arranged in one column and in this order:
- Your name and contact information
- Summary (two to three lines)

How to make your resume ATS-friendly
Employers and job portals often use applicant tracking systems (ATS) to scan the text in your resume. These tips ensure it remains readable:
- Stick to one column of plain text. Avoid using tables, text boxes, photos, icons, and skill bars as they can confuse the software. Resumes from this builder always use this format.
- Choose standard headings like Experience, Education, and Skills so the software easily recognizes each section.
- Incorporate the job post's terms for skills and job titles when they accurately describe you.
- Submit a PDF made from text, like those produced by this builder, or a Word document. Scans or photos of printed resumes are not readable.
- Keep date formats consistent throughout, such as “Jun 2023 – Present”.
- Put your name and contact information directly in the main section of the page, rather than in a header or footer.
